Magic Oloffson

The Oloffson is probably the most famous hotel in Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti. The place is unique and magical. Over the years, the former family villa featuring the well-known “gingerbread” architecture has hosted famous visitors, artists, journalists. The novelist Graham Greene made it the scene of one of his most famous novels: The comedians. Today the hotel is managed by Richard Morse, founder of the band RAM that performs there on a very regular basis.

In this film Richard Senecal describes a visit to the Oloffson. He does not just present the stunning architecture of the place but he lets us also enter the special and almost mystical atmosphere.

In this short film together social, political and satirical, Richard Senecal describes the full vision of a country still looking for answers. A destiny of which the Haitians are the only masters.

Before having his dinner Jaypi (Paolo Charles) gathers his laundry in the garden. There he meets a strange individual (John Smith Sanon) who speaks only French and who is totally naked. The stranger describes in detail a Haiti that yet does not exist.

Santiago, Dominican Republic, 2011. Thousands of young people from the neighboring republic of Haiti cross the border to continue their university studies. A new parameter in the maze of migration between both countries. It is far from the cliché of Haitians working in bateys or construction. These young Haitians are mostly from middle-class Port-au-Prince and Cap Haitian, they have an education level at least equal to that of their fellow Dominicans and they pay higher studies in medicine, engineering, architecture…

This new migration has originated from the serious political and social crisis that has rocked Haiti for many years. It is also a consequence of the near bankruptcy of the Haitian education system. The earthquake of January 2010 which destroyed the Haitian capital has also increased the migration flow.

Through this film we begin to follow these young people in their quest for better training, a better future. We discuss their economic problems, integration, reception and perception by their fellow Dominicans.

Beyond the simple issue of students we also raise the question of a redefinition of the relations between both states, interdependence in a global world. A documentary to show that living together across differences, prejudice and the weight of history is perhaps still possible.

Santiago de los Caballeros is the second city of the Dominican Republic. Located in the Cibao valley, it is the meeting place of tradition and modernity. While not strictly a tourist town it has interesting places and unique images. This test video was shot in the broader context of a documentary on the life of Haitian students very present in the city.

Roland Dorfeuille was an Haitian actor who became famous after his characterization of Pyram in the well known play “Pèlen Tèt” by Haitian writer and painter Franketienne. Dorfeuille also featured himself in many television commercials. This was one of his last commercials for the Haitian airport authority.

Martissant, the dream of a living

Martissant is a densely populated neighborhood connected to downtown Port-au-Prince by two main busy roads. In June 2007, following a proposal by the Foundation for Knowledge and Liberty (FOKAL), a presidential decree freed for public use the Dunham, Leclerc, Pauline and Mangonès estates. These four properties will become the Martissant Park. A buffer zone encompassing the urbanized areas around is also decreed: the joint development zone of Martissant.

The project, launched in February 2008, includes the creation and development of a natural public space of fifteen acres. Its primary mission is to preserve and enhance the Haitian flora and save an exceptional natural environment and historical heritage. It will also host cultural , research and training spaces.
